Open laptops, open minds: Consensus and accuracy in big five personality perception from laptop stickers

Using traditional methods and cross-classified structural equation models (CC-SEMs), we assessed consensus accuracy across 1139 observations made by 8 perceivers of 147 laptops whose owners completed self-reports the same Big Five traits facets. Average correlations were slightly stronger using (0.32) than CC-SEMs (0.25). (0.21) (0.18). CC-SEMs, all except negative emotionality showed adequate consensus, whereas was significant only for open-mindedness extraversion; extraversion emerged after controlling laptop type number-of-stickers. Number-of-stickers partially mediated—or served as a cue for—the effect linking targets’ aesthetic sensitivity to perceivers’ ratings facet.
